Installation Guide for Linux

If you would rather use Orca instead of Java FreeTTS, please see the Orca version of this guide.

  1. Download and install Firefox.

  2. Setup Java for Firefox.

  3. You will also need to have administrator privileges to install the FreeTTS engine. Also, be sure that when you are creating the symbolic link for the Java plugin as instructed in the previous link that you are using the file inside your Java home directory (which is where the FreeTTS files are being installed). A common error has been users linking to a Java directory which was not their Java home directory and thus causing Firefox to look for the FreeTTS files in the wrong place. If Java FreeTTS is not speaking for you, please double check that you used the correct Java home directory when you made the symbolic link for the plugin.

  4. Download and install the "CLC-4-TTS to FreeTTS Interface" from the downloads page. Note that the jar file for the CLC-4-TTS Java FreeTTS Interface is an executable installer. It is to be run with Java; do not try to manually extract the contents of the jar file.

  5. Download the current version of "CLC-4-TTS Suite with Fire Vox - Bundle Pack" from the downloads page.

  6. Start Firefox and go to File, Open File. Then choose the file you just downloaded in the previous step.

  7. Click the "Install Now" button on the window that pops up.

  8. Restart Firefox twice. Congratulations, you've just set up Fire Vox. For a quick start guide to using Fire Vox, visit the Tutorials section.
